ART . /// . CURATION . /// . RESEARCH . /// . ORGANISATION
I have always been intrigued by the depicted object. A representation in one flat layer of something that we know from our world. In addition to the formal qualities that underlie the depicted object, I am particularly interested in the ‘image’ that the image creates; a representation of a possible reality.
In contrast to the depicted object, I also feel a great connection to the physical world in which we live; rituals and everyday habits, actions so integrated in our body that these become part of us and the objects that participate in this.
With my focus on the depicted object and the physically used object, my work takes place within the domain of the commercial image, the laws of the mass produced object and the individual environment of the occupant. Lifestyle and marketing as well as living and working are concepts that I connect to my work.
By using materials, objects and rules known within these domains, an investigation and reflection opens up towards the origin and being of my environment. From this position, concepts unfold in processes and I often take on the role of director. For the physical creation of the work, this means that the production not only consists of the medium and the action but is also linked to a script. My role is not necessarily the same as that of the maker, this creates space for collaborations and collective work.
Next to art making I am very interested in making exhibition concepts and to work with artists and their work and vision. Together with Kim Wawer, Monica Mays, Kristoffer Zeiner and Karen Huang we started a new art platform SOUTERRAIN. Souterrain is a basement studio in Amsterdam and place for artists to find inspiration, focus on their work and get involved in extensive exhibition projects. Our focus lies within the fields of architecture and art. Recently SOUTERRAIN was rewarded with support from AFK Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunsten. For more information about our upcoming project AISE / ATION check this link.
Since summer 2017 I am part of YAFF. Young Artists Feed Forward researches what the confrontation between the autonomous attitude of the artist and other environments can produce. Starting from a variety of artists, YAFF does not try to resolve the conflict but wants to make it visible. Together we collectively work on different projects in and outside the field of arts.
