Installation view of 'Here Is To The Mess We Make' at Cacaofabriek Helmond | October 2022
By looking intensively at the everyday, you sometimes see something special or you learn to think differently about the familiar. For the exhibition 'What happens when nothing happens' the collective Zuiver., consisting of artists Tyrell Kuipers and Jolijn van den Heuvel, and Manus Groenen bring together eight artists who are capable of doing exactly that: bringing attention to the special in the everyday.
The title is taken from a quote by the experimental French philosopher and writer Georges Perec (1936). What he investigates is often so mundane that others would not even notice it, a quality he shares with the artists in this exhibition. The exhibition features work by Eleye Boerenkamps, Stijn ter Braak, Mischa Doorenweerd, Ruud Goedhart, Eva Hoonhout, Reinier Vrancken, Tyrell Kuipers and Jolijn van den Heuvel.
The installation Here Is To The Mess We Make by Eva Hoonhout (1990) is an ever-evolving ode to our attempts to live successful lives, an imaginary space in which chaos and calmness seem to coexist. In a society where success appears to be the dominant motto, I wonder; do we give ourselves the space to determine what is good for us or do we set the paths we walk largely by the expectations we impose on ourselves?
